Back to Sketching
After attending a workshop on Urban Sketching I finally feel motivated to do quick sketches whenever I feel like it. After my studies in Dortmund I felt really discouraged to pick up watercolor and stopped sketching all together, which is a shame since this is something that I enjoyed doing for quite some time.
So, I put an end to my "misery" and picked up my empty sketchbook which has been calling out to me from the shelf for a little over a year now. (Sorry, buddy.) |

Working on my Sketchbook
As part of my assignment this semester I will have to submit a sketchbook. I really like that we get a lot of independent time to work on this since I like to work in the studio a lot. i get a lot done there. In the end it was more work than I thought initially, so I had to work at home as well. Unfortunately I have a tiny desk in my accommodation which is why I have to work on my bed. In the end it all worked out. I think that I am quite surprised with how much fun it actually was (despite the amount of sleep that I lost worrying and jotting down ideas in the middle of the night).
I made the mistake to underestimate the amount of time that digital work actually takes...it is easier said than done, and it it most definitely quicker said than done.....This is the actual reason for one or the other all-nighter... I am lucky that I have a bit of experience with Photoshop and Illustrator or else it would have taken, well, even longer. Still, I enjoy working with these programs and when I hold the physical copy in my hands the work and the hours are definitely worth it. I really look forward to improving in that area.
Perspective
In today's workshop Adeline taught us about perspective. I knew about it beforehand, but it was helpful to refresh the memory a bit. i liked that we used architectural pictures as references, since my go-to-motive is definitely nothing static. I will try to improve my straight lines, though.
Manchester Art Gallery
The trip to the Manchester Art Gallery was very interesting and definitely worthwhile. I spent most of my time there inside one room, which was jewellery-themed and in all black. I loved the atmosphere that it evoked and the brogues that it held were really fascinating and captivating. I drew a few of them.
I always find it extremely inspiring to see other artists work. However, I am not going to lie, I often have a hard time enjoying museum visits, but I could connect to some pieces in the gallery, so that wasn't the case at all, this time. I didn't get to check out the upper floors properly though, so I will definitely visit a second time to do that! |
Watercolor
In this Friday's session we learned a few key things about water color, such as wet on wet technique to blend the colors well together.
The session improved my understanding of watercolor; and for me the best part was that I could watch how to work with them, which really helped me.
In the end, we all had a go.

Sketching and Colouring in PS
I had the opportunity to go on a sketching session with my course for the first time. I really enjoy sketching to begin with, so I really looked forward to it. The weather was really nice, which made things quite easy. I have definitely had worse sketching session in the outside.
The sketches below are of the Church of St. John in Salford and a few places nearby. Details really catch my eye, but I had to hurry, because after all it was just sketching and I tried to catch a few details within a wider frame (i.e. the lantern).
The following week I learned how to color in the sketches using Photo Shop. I really enjoy working with PS and this was a session that helped me a lot for I have tried to color in with PS before, but I didn't know how to prepare my sketches.

Salford Mood board (Learning Layout)
In the weekly PC workshop I learned how to layout images in Adobe Illustrator.
It was a really useful session as I was able to create the mood board for my trip through Salford and my impressions.
I like that the workshop connects with the other modules I have in my course, which definitely enhances the work experience and makes sessions and workshops more effective, in my opinion.

Learning about Salford
On my first week of the course I learned a lot about the rich history of Salford.
Whilst on the trip through Campus, I took pictures of things that intrigued me and which were somewhat conceptualized.
This post is not about the concept photos, but rather about my overall (really compromised) impressions of Salford and the Campus.
Also, I am not really practiced with taking photos as I usually draw and never bothered to get a good camera. ( My hands are also always shaking, so most of my pictures end up blurry when I take them on my phone...)
I should get a camera...
